Laughton moved to Hollywood in the 1930s after starting his stage and film career in Britain.
Possibly his most famous role was as Captain Bligh, in the Mutiny on the Bounty (1935), with Clark Gable as Fletcher Christian.
He became an American citizen in 1950.
In 1955 he directed The Night of the Hunter, staring Robert Mitchum, which is now considered a classic but was unsuccessful at the time of its release.
