The Old Cassville Presbyterian Church was one of the three churches that General W.T. Sherman did not burn when he burned the rest of the city of Cassville to the ground on his march to the sea. This church is now an AME Church but at the time of Sherman's march it had been in existence for 30 years. Today the building is in poor shape but is still used. Because this was a hospital during the occupation Sherman's forces spared the church and two others in Cassville. I do know that there are interesting stories of the razing of Cassville. The official reason that Cassville was burned was that it was in retaliation for guerrilla attacks during the occupation by the Union forces. Local lore is that the real reason was that, one day during a march through town by a small group of Union troops , several teenage girls sat along the road and giggled and laughed at the bedraggled troops passing by. At any rate this church and a few other locations are all that remained after the Union forces left.
