The original photo was published in 1905 in USGS Bulletin 252, Preliminary Report on the Geology and Water Resources of Central Oregon, by Israel C. Russell with the caption “Lava butte, near Benham Falls, Crook County, Oregon. 1903.”



The site for this photo is a high point on the flow edge about a quarter mile west of Lava Lands Visitor Center. Main changes visible are the road to the summit, more trees on butte, and fewer trees on flow.
