Holy Cross Catholic Church was dedicated on September 14, 1879 and designed by Colonel Ludwig August Forsbert, who was and engineer and architect for the City of Lynchburg. At the time the church was built, a 2,000-pound bell was installed in the church steeple, but due to the deafening sound, a separate tower was built in 1899 especially for the huge bell. Up until 1978 the bell was rung by hand, now the bell is electronically controlled and part of the tower now serves as the Church Archives.
