Meier and Frank Department Store (1909, 1915, 1932) is located at 621 SW Fifth Avenue. The building is American Renaissance Style. Inspired by Chicago's famous Carson, Pirie, Scott and Co. Department Store, known informally as Carson's, and built in stages, the white terra-cotta building was the first major commission for Portland architect A.E. Doyle, who went on to design Multnomah Falls Lodge, the Central Library, and other local landmarks.

Supposedly the office level of the Meier & Frank building is haunted by the ghost of a janitor.

Or perhaps the building is haunted by the spirit of Clark Gable? Before Clark Gable met fame and fortune as an actor, he worked at Meier & Frank department store selling neckties in 1922. "They put me to work demonstrating rubber-lined neckties. All day, I rolled the neckties up in a ball in my hands and then showed that there were no wrinkles.” Wander through the necktie section. After he drew a short breath, you might hear him say lightly but softly: “My dear, I don’t give a damn.”
Public access?:
The building has undergone extensive renovation so inquire where the office level was originally as well as the original location of the men's ties.
