This well is at the sight of what was once the pioneer town of St. Francis. St. Francis was granted a post office on March 15, 1888 and discontinued on Oct. 15, 1909.
St. Francis was one of several important river towns serving the steamboat traffic in these early years. But, when the train came to Central Florida from Jacksonville in 1886, taking the commerce from the steamboat lines. These towns began to die, and in a few years they became "ghost towns" that hold many great stories of Florida's early beginnings.
The well bears the oder of rotten eggs often associated with artesian wells in Florida.
