Long Description:

Early Kenmare Days

In 1891, Augustines  Rouses began prospecting for coal in what would eventually become known as Kenmare.  As one of the first settlers, he served as postmaster for the town (then known as Lignite) until this death in a gunfight in 1896.  The town then went nameless, until Kenmare was established in 1897.  The area thrived, with steamboats pushing barge loads of grain to Kenmare from the small communities located on the Upper Des Lacs Lake.  In 1904, one of the buyers shipped 200,000 bushels by these barges!  Although the barges are gone, huge amounts of grain still travel from the area - only now it goes by rail! ~ text of marker
