Despite having been around for more than four decades, this Oakland County mainstay has changed its stripes a little bit recently, adding a few well-placed tweaks to the interior's aesthetics. Alban's has long been known for its quality menu, superb delicatessen and unique gift baskets, all in one place. In the very late spring of 2003, owners did a little jazzing up of the place. This included new chairs and tables in the bar and dining room, and adding charming little oil lamps, adding some more flair to an already established and very likeable dining experience. They have not, however, sacrificed the flavor and genuine state of deliciousness that emanates from the kitchen. Available still is the sauteed chicken andouillette, chargrilled filet and pretzel crumb walleye. The deli is still one of the best around, with a ton of great sandwiches and a terrific boxed lunch offerent. Choose from five different sandwiches and get cole slaw, choice of potato, or macaroni salad and small bag of chips, brownie or a piece of fruit, for just under $9. It will be enough to last for dinner, too. -- John Horn CityGuide
UPDATE: The restaurant is now closed according to the Oakland Press 09/28/2006 (
