This sign is located on the east edge of the parking lot for the Thomas Condon Paleontology Center.

Marker Name: Sheep Rock
Marker Text: This was not always sagebrush and juniper country. Once, this rocky scene was a hardwood forest, full of strange and familiar animals struggling to survive. The evidence for this scene is found in the colorful, fossil-bearing rock formations before you.
The John Day formations are made up of the red layers, up through the green and pink layers of Sheep Rock peak, to the bottom of the Picture Gorge Basalt capstone at the top. The John Day formations before you represent about one-tenth of the depth of all the fossil-bearing layers in the entire John Day Fossil Beds.
At the Clarno Unit and Painted Hills Unit, discover different scenic landscapes containing other stories from the Age of Mammals.
