The bridge was built in 1912 to replace a pontoon bridge. It was originally open to vehicular traffic. The deck of the bridge is only 15 feet wide. It hard to believe that even the large cars of the early '60s passed each other on the bridge. In 1965, it was closed to vehicular traffic, and is now a walking bridge.
The Bridge Drive In (BDI), on the north side of the bridge has been the city’s favourite ice cream drive-in for over 40 years,
