Suomelinna was constructed in the 1700s, when Finland was part of Sweden. It was an attempt by the Swedes to reclaim the land that Russia had seized at the beginning of the 1700s.
As a site it is especially interesting because of the battlements and stone fortifications, which were built in a typical arrow shaped form.
The site contains many ancient cannons and other weapons, and several museums.
Suomelinna is also the site of a present day naval training centre.
The easiest way to reach it is by the ferry from the market square in Helsinki.
