In late 1848 the Cody family moved to a wood framed home overlooking the Mississippi River in Le Clair, IA. Young “Will” grew to be old enough to go to school. His sister, Helen, wrote years later that Will did not do well in school as he much preferred swimming and fishing in the Mississippi River and being outdoors. Thus, he received some education for his later life. The Cody family resided here until March 9, 1852.
In 1933, the house was purchased, cut in half, and moved by railroad to Cody, Wyoming, which was the start of the Cody Museum there.
