About the church:
The chapel of Nossa Senhora de Piedade was built in the same location in 1900. There wasn't a real priest, so monthly a local priest in the region would come along to conduct Mass. The current church was built in 1968. Its first priest was Father Afonso Nikraque, a Dutchman. Our Lady of Sorrows is the patron saint of the city of Varzea Paulista.
