RIBC has been established since 1957, encompassing various types of water sports including boat fishing, dinghy and cruiser sailing and racing, windsurfing and kayaking.
Roa Island (linked to the mainland by road causeway) is down channel from Barrow, it's sheltered behind Walney Island, and gives access out into Morecambe Bay and the Irish Sea. The main hazard is the tide which can rush through the channel between Piel and Roa at 6+ knots.
A lot of folk in Barrow have their own boat and go out fishing. Walney Channel is often busy with small boats heading in or out. Power boating has also become more popular with the diminishing opportunities in the Lake District.
