This spot marks the spot where the the spike was driven on May 12, 1898 completing the first streetcar line ending at the main gate of the University of Arizona in Tucson AZ.

“Across from the Main Gate on May 12, 1898, Charles F Hoff, Manager of the Tucson Street Railway Company, drove the final spike completing tracks to the downtown business district and residential areas farther south. Mule-drawn streetcars traveled a five-mile route along Third Street (University Boulevard) and Stone Avenue: The fare was a nickel. On June 1, 1906, the Tucson Rapid Transit Company inaugurated an electric streetcar system which played a significant role in residential development west of the university. A transportation era ended for Tucson motorbuses replaced the streetcars after their last run December 31, 1930.”
The same tracks are used now by the Old Pueblo Trolley (http://www.oldpueblotrolley.org/ which runs electric streetcars along University Boulevard but down Fourth Avenue instead of Stone. The Old Pueblo Trolley also operates a museum downtown by the train depot which shows the transit history for Tucson.
