Philip church, the pioneer land owner and the father of Allegany County, built in the Belvidere Estate in 1810 beside the Allegany river, 3 miles north of Belmont.
The town of Belvidere received its name from the homestead of Judge Philip Church and is in the northwest part of town. The postoffice was established about 1835 and originally called Hobbyville after the postmaster general, whose name was Hobbie. The name was changed to Belvidere after the railroad was completed.
Please go to the website listed below for some interesting history about the Belvidere Estate.
The estate is privately owned and a posted sign asks that no one enter the premises, so please view the estate from the road. Many of the structures can be seen from the road.
