The earliest settlers to this area found heavy timbers on the top of a hill, the remnants of a wooden cross believed to have been left there by Spanish missionaries on top of the hill. John Durst, a German immigrant, named the hill Kreuszberg, German for Cross Mountain, and Cross Mountain is what it has been known as ever since.
The first modern era cross was erected in 1848, then in 1921, St Mary's Catholic Church erected a more permanent cross of reinforced concrete covered with sheet metal and painted white. Rebuilt in 1940 and electrified in 1946, it is currently owned by the City of Fredericksburg.
