Found this unusual example in Der Stadt Friedhof, the old city cemetery in Fredericksburg, Texas. The early German settlers of this area were notorious for their thrifty ways and this would appear to be another example. There are thousands of graves in this cemetery, but not a normal zinc tombstone in the lot.
Many of these early burials have a cast iron fence surrounding the plot with a stone out of the local granite or sandstone. In this case there is no stone, just the zinc name plate fastened to the iron gate. The same type plate that is usually associated with a zinc tombstone. Unfortunately we know nothing about the deceased, but something tells us there is a story there.
Note how the marked plot is the only one without a stone, and the only one with a zinc name plate.
