C-123
"Provider"
The basis of design for the C-123 was the XG-20 cargo glider. The first
prototype of this powered assault transport was flown on 14 October 1949.
It was powered by two R2800-3 engines. The second prototype flew on 21
April 1951, powered by four J44 turbojets. After production difficulties
and a change in manufacturer, the first Fairchild-built C-123B entered service
with the 309th Troop Carrier Group, in July 1955. 302 C-123B providers
were built to fulfill USAF contract requirements. Nine more changes were
made to the original design, which brings the "Provider" to its present
configuration as the C-123K. The C-123k first flew on 27 May 1966.
This aircraft was one of the 183 C-123B models converted to C-123K models by
mounting turbojet pods under each wing. Many C-123Ks saw service in the
skies over Vietnam, performing airlift and other missions.
