The plaque reads:
G-5
Republic of South Africa, Iraq
This weapon was devised to counter the superior range and firepower of the Soviet supplied Angolan artillery. South Africa commenced development of the G-5 in 1978 and it became operational by 1983. It features an auxiliary power unit which can be placed in action more rapidly than most conventional artillery.
The barrel is fitted with a single baffle muzzle brake. The breech mechanism resembles the M198 155mm Howitzer and is semiautomatic. Its extreme range and accuracy are the results of a well developed gun tube combined with "extended range full bore base bleed" (ERFB BB) ammunition which reduces drag and boosts range up to 30 percent.
The power unit not only reduces set up time, but offers limited, self propelled capability (up to ten mile per hour and climb gradients of 40 percent). Optional equipment includes an onboard fire control computer. A unique self propelled version, the G6 "Rhino", has six wheels and has been very successful. In addition to South Africa, the G5 has been used by Iraq against Iran. This G5 is a war trophy of the 212th Field Artillery Brigade.
