The marker reads as follows:

Here, October 16, 1864. The Gallant 24 South Carolina Infantry Regiment, commanded by Col. Ellison Capers, participated in a delaying action, allowing General Hood's Confederate army to fall back into Alabama. The 24th SC. lost 4 officers and 40 men.
They behaved nobly in battle against the federal aggressors.
