Until 1850, the California coast was covered with more than two million acres of old grown redwood forest. Only 100 years later, 90% of the redwoods were lost to logging and development.

The stump of this 1,753 year-old tree in
Fort Bragg, CA is a sad witness to what
has been lost.

Redwoods National Park (founded in 1968) and a number of adjacent State Parks came just in time to preserve what has been left. In 1994, Redwoods National Park and three abutting State Parks were combined to Redwood National and State Parks in order to manage forests and watersheds as a single unit.
We have been to many National Parks and have never been disappointed.
This one is no exception!

The tallest trees in the world

Coast Redwoods are the world's tallest trees, growing to heights of more than 300 feet. As shown above, we took pictures of some pretty tall ones but can't provide a picture of the world's tallest tree.
That tree, called Hyperion, has a confirmed height of 379.1 feet. It grows in a remote area in the north of the park. The exact location has been classified for fear that visitors would love the tree and its environment to death.

God lives above the redwoods, so men say
Looking down, straight and true
at the best of all his treasures
And if a man should stand among them to pray
It's against them
the Lord would take his measure.
