Waterloo Sunset is a song by the Kinks, written by Kinks singer songwriter Ray Davies and released in 1967.
It is one of the most famous popular songs about London. Time Out magazine named it the "Anthem of London" [1]. Oddly enough Davies originally called it "Liverpool Sunset" [2] but changed it in order that it didn't seem derivative of the Beatles.
The picture is of Waterloo Bridge taken from the South Bank of the Thames, in front of the National Theatre. This is also where the waymark co-ordinates were taken.
Waterloo is the name given to an area of London on the South Bank of the Thames around Waterloo railway station and Waterloo bridge. The name Waterloo was first given to the bridge [5] in memory of the British victory at the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, in Belgium at the end of the Napoleonic wars.
