First established by the territorial legislature Dakota County originally included parts of what are now three other counties. Burt County was separated in 1862 and the present boundaries of Dakota county were set with the formation of Dixon and Thurston Countries in 1889.
Dakota City, platted on the Missouri River in 1856, has always been the county seat, resisting efforts to relocated that designation to St. John in 1858. South Sioux City, now a much larger city to the north not established until 1887, has made attempts to acquire the county seat but Dakota City has prevailed.
The present two story white stone courthouse, replaces earlier courthouses. It has recently added a new county jail wing.
