At 7,800 ft elevation, Caples Lake is the highest Alpine lake along California's State Route 88. The road leads right along the northern shore of the lake, offering great views over the lake (pictures above and below).
The lake is named after James "Doc" Caples who emigrated from Ohio in 1848 and passed through the area on his way to settle in Placerville and Sacramento. "Doc" Caples was a delegate to the 1849 convention which wrote the California State Constitution under which California was admitted to the union in 1850.
