Erected in 1869, the monument was created to honor William Wallace, one of Scotland's most famous tragic heroes. The tower stands on Abbey Craig, overlooking the site of Wallace's famous victory at Stirling Bridge over the River Forth. Climbing the increasingly vertical and narrow 246 steps to the top affords visitors a magnificent (if frighteningly windy) view of the Scottish countryside. Be sure to ask for your certificate at the gift shop before you leave. The interior museum showcases Wallace's famous claymore.
