North of this monument stood DeKayville Place, stable of the famous pacer horse Shade On. Shade On was foaled at Ewing, Nebraska in 1894. He and the foals he sired won over $30,000 in purses, an immense sum for the time. The horse died in 1911 and is buried near this spot.
