Marker Name: Newberry Volcano
Marker Text: Newberry Volcano is a large shield-shaped composite volcano extending from the southern horizon to the eastern horizon. Newberry is one of the largest volcanoes in the lower 48 states and the largest volcano in Oregon. It covers an area in excess of 500 square miles. Over 400 cinder cones dot the flanks of Newberry, one of these is Lava Butte. The volcano is made up of rocks that range from basalt to rhyolite in composition and have ages that range from over 500,000 years old to as young as 1,300 years. At the summit is Newberry Crater, a 4 by 5 mile caldera, which contains East and Paulina Lakes.
