Marker Name: Building a Cinder Cone
Marker Text: You are standing on the lowest part of the crater rim. Prevailing southwest winds carried the majority of ash and cinders northeast to build the higher northeast rim. Fine brown and black airfall ash from the eruption is exposed in road cuts northeast of Lava Butte. The lava flows erupted through the south side of the cone below this point, because the cone is thinnest here. Directly below are lava gutters through which flowed the huge volume of molten rock. From the parking area at Lava Lands Visitor Center, The Trail of the Molten Land leads to the gutter from which the lava emerged.
