Geology sign on crater rim trail.
Marker Name: Kipukas
Marker Text: As you view the lava field from this point you will notice a large island of trees. This is known as a kipuka, a Hawaiian word for a clear place or oasis within a lava bed where there may be vegetation. The vegetation you see on a kipuka does not grow on the surrounding flow, but is on land never touched by the lava. Kipukas result from topographic irregularities and the viscosity of the lava. The surface of the kipuka may be above or below the surface of the surrounding lava flows, and they can range in size from a few square feet to several square miles.
There are several other terms all meaning the same thing; an island like area in a sea of lava. Some of these other terms are steptoe, dagala, and Numatak volcanique.
