Marker Name: Lava Butte Lava Flow
Marker Text: Rushing from a breach on the south side of Lava Butte, lava moved in a series of great flows to cover 6,100 acres. The flows form a rough semi-circle around the butte to the west and north. The flows which spread west, dammed the Deschutes River, and formed a shallow lake upstream. The lava flows crowded the river against the Benham Buttes, forcing the river to cut a new channel and create scenic Benham Falls.
Also visible from this point are a number of rocky mounds that were “rafted” from the breach area into the lava field by the great streams of molten rock.
