Marker Name: A Commemoration
Marker Text: Honoring the vision of three men who, on December 4, 1925, preserved the LAVA RIVER CAVE for posterity:
- Ira Williams of the state Bureau of Mines and Geology,
- Judge R.W. Sawyer of Bend, who recommended the first plan for preserving the cave, and
- J.P. Hennessy, General Manager of the Shevlin-Hixon Lumber Company, who transferred the deed of property to the State of Oregon.
In addition, all the public servants who have worked for the U.S. Forest Service to make the Lava River Cave a continual place of wonder and enjoyment.
