Near the intersection of Garfield Pl. and Race St. is the STATUE OF JAMES
A. GARFIELD, which was executed by Charles Niehaus, a local sculptor.
Since 1915 the bronze figure has stood here, on a low pedestal.
Previously it had been in the center of the street crossing, on a high pedestal,
where it annoyed drivers of both buggies and motor cars.
Garfield (1831-81), an Ohio man, was elected President in 1880 and died in
the following September, the victim of an assassin's bullet. Garfield
Place was named in his honor in 1882. Money raised by popular subscription
paid for this statue, with was unveiled in 1887. Cincinnati: A Guide to the Queen City and Its Neighbors,
Tour 7, pg. 200.
The James A. Garfield statue was moved during the renovation of Piatt Park in
1988 and now stands at the Vine Street entrance to the park.
