150 Pounder Armstrong Gun Captured at Fort Fisher, North
Carolina - January 15, 1865
Rifled muzzleloading gun made in 1864 by Sir W.G. Armstrong & Company,
England, said to have been a gift from private donors in England to the
Confederacy. A major weapon in the armament of Fort Fisher, Wilmington,
North Carolina, it was captured January 15, 1865 by a combined Union Army and
Naval assault closing the last deep water port to Confederate blockage runners.
Shipped to the Military Academy in 1865, the gun was prominent feature of
Trophy Point for the next hundred years until the deterioration of the wooden
carriage caused it to be removed from Trophy Point.
A faithful reproduction of the original seacoast carriage and the return of
the Armstrong gun to Trophy Point was a privileged salute to our Alma Mater on
our fiftieth anniversary. USMA 1932" - text of plaque near gun
