Marker Name: Robert W. Sawyer
Marker Text: This park is named in honor of Robert W. Sawyer, 1890-1959.
Robert Sawyer was a lawyer, newspaperman and one of Oregon’s earliest conservationists. A native of Maine, Sawyer was a Harvard Law graduate who arrived in Bend in 1912 by horse and buggy. From 1916 to 1953 he owned and edited The Bend Bulletin, where he was known to conserve paper by drafting editorials on the backs of used envelopes. Sawyer served as Deschutes County’s second judge, and was honored in 1953 as Oregon’s Outstanding Citizen of the Half Century. He volunteered for many state and national land management agencies and enjoyed botany, ornithology, history and hiking. The State Highway Commission dedicated Sawyer State Park in 1931; this site later transferred to the Bend Metro Park & Recreation District.
