"The sphinxes guarding the front of the Viele pyramid are not the original ones. Mrs. Viele did not like the physical characteristics of the first version, and they were dumped in the river and replaced. Years later one of the original statues was salvaged, and currently lies in the back yard of Quarters 105b at West Point." - online tour of West Point Cemetery
