According to the plaque on August 4, 1889, a roaring fire swept northward to the river leveling 32 blocks of downtown Spokane. It started in a wood frame boarding house facing the railroad. The railroad provided a fire break. Unfortunately the new water system was not functioning properly and there was no water pressure for the fire fighting. The town quickly rebuilt and grew.
