The first film to play at the Del Mar was the "China Clipper" for the World Premiere.
Time, however, took a toll on the old theatre, and in 2001 a major renovation was undertaken by the City Redevelopment Agency, a corporate partner (Nickelodean Theatres Inc.) and donations from the community. By 2002 the renovation was complete and ready for another world premiere..."China Clipper" of course, with its Star, Beverly Roberts, on hand for the Grand Reopening.
Since then, the Del Mar has enjoyed a prominant and special place on the Mall, to the extent that its large neon sign was declared exempt from city codes that forbid signs of such size nowadays.
