The Civil War Monument in McConnelsville Ohio was donated by Detroit industrialist T.H. Simpson to his hometown. The bronze statue of a Civil War private stands 13 feet tall. It is perched on a block of granite that came from the Gettysburg battlefield.
The monument sits in the public square of McConnelsville, Ohio, directly in front of the Morgan County Courthouse.
The monument contains two plaques. The first is inscribed with the text of the Gettysburg Address. The second attributes the memorial to its benefactor, T.H. Simpson.
While the plaque only lists the year of its construction, the Morgan County Herald describes the dedication ceremony on October 17, 1923.
Unfortunately, T.H. Simpson died in May 1923 and did not see the completed monument.
