Captain Scott set out on his voyage to the Antartic from the port of Cardiff. This memorial is in Roath Park lake. The connection with Cardiff is that Scott and his companions sailed from Cardiff in the Terra Nova in 1910. The weather vane at the top depicts one of Scott's earlier expedition ships, the Discovery.
Scott and his team perished on returning from the South Pole having lost the race to be first to get there to the Norwegian Roald Amundsen.
