The station was built in 1924 for the New York Central Railroad. The depot was designed by Alfred Felheimer and G C Cleveland in a Modern-Neo Classical style. When the building was no longer used as a railroad depot Conrail, the successor to the New York Central, sold the building and it became a beauty college.
In 2000 Lorain county purchased the building with plans to convert the building back to an Amtrak station and intermodal transportation hub with local transit, Greyhound and Amtrak using the facility and also have meeting facilities incorporated. This plan has not been fully realized at this time. Federal funding has been obtained and work has begun on the station.
