Rammohun Roy served the British East Indian Company before leaving to devote himself to public service. He crusaded against suttee (burning widows on funeral pyres) and for the equal rights of women. He was also a prominent religious scholar, writing on both Hinduism and Christianity.
In 1831, he was appointed the Mughal Emperor's ambassador to the United Kingdom. In 1833, he came to Bristol, where he fell ill with meningitis and died.
This statue is one of several sites throughout Bristol honoring Rammohun Roy. There is also his tomb, a street named after him and a bust of him in the council building.
According to Indian news reports, "During India's 50th anniversary of independence in 1997, Rammohun Roy's statue by noted sculptor Niranjan Pradhan was installed in a prominent location in College Green in the city centre. Local council officials reserved the site for the statue for 13 years."
