The statue is located in a grotto-like rendition, recreating the scene of the Grotte de Massabielle (Cave of Massabielle) in Lourdes, France, in which 1858 an appearance of Our Lady (Vierge Marie, Vergine Maria) was reported, and of which location is a destination of religous pilgrimage to this day.
Carlow College is a small catholic liberal-arts college in Pittsburgh.
