The Fort McPherson Trail followed the divide between Medicine Creek and Deer Creek connecting Fort McPherson in the Platte Valley near present day Maxwell with the Republican River valley. It was the route used by General Carr's Republican Valley Expedition of 1869, a military campaign cleared hostile natives from the region.
This simple, worn, stone marker is typical of those which mark the routes of early trails throughout the great plains.
The marker stands by a roomy highway pullout. There's a geocache at the site.
