This sign is located in the interpretive shelter at the Sahalie Falls Site on the McKenzie-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway. There are three additional signs but their main topics are not of historic interest, but they do contain useful sub topics.
Marker Name: Traveling & Trading
Marker Text: The Chinook (SHIN-ook) Jargon, formed from Chinook, Nootka (NOOT-ka), French, English and Salish (SAIL-ish) words, provided a rudimentary trade language that allowed people to exchange news and goods.
Chinook Jargon existed before the French and British arrived. As European traders moved among the Pacific Northwest tribes, the need for a trade language intensified. Its use peaked in 1863. As French traders withdrew, use faded and finally disappeared. English took over as the dominant trade language.
