Marker Name: Old Meets New
Marker Text: This place is where old meets new. Across the river, the western Cascades began errupting into being 40 million years ago. The oldest rocks on the Willamette National Forest are found here. Lava flows that Sahalie & Koosah pour over today, however, are geologic babies at 3,000 years BP (before present).
Each layer is a different mountain-building flow. Dissolved minerals and gases vary with each eruption, bestowing each with unique, distinctive attributes. As you stand here, notice the lack of holes (less dissolved gas present) in the older rocks, and the sleek lines of water caressed stones.
