Marker Text: Evidence of early lifestyles, rituals and traditions of Native American peoples existing near Sparks Lake reveal the Upper Deschutes area was once inhabited by Great Basin Indian tribes. These Native Americans contributed greatly to the history of the Pacific Northwest and flourished in a lifestyle of hunting and fishing before the settlement of Euro-Americans. Feathers, pine needles, grasses, sticks, and other natural materials were collected and used to make clothing, baskets, and other items. Legends and historical lore surround the nearby mountains and lakes as evidenced by ancient pictographs located throughout the area.
