This cap is located along an abandoned section of the old Bend to Elk Lake Road. The road segment is about 800 feet southeast of the current Cascade Lakes Highway. The cap is set in a boulder about 20 feet SE of the old road centerline. The cap was set by the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey in 1942 and was marked Y358.
In addition to the benchmark cap there is a bolt set in a rock about 10 feet to the east. The bolt was probably also set by the USCGS in about 1942. Bolts like this were generally used as temporary benchmarks at the time of the initial leveling survey. After the survey was completed, permanent benchmarks were placed somewhere near the temporary points.
