The school was designed by Prairie School architect Barry Byrne, a onetime apprentice of Frank Lloyd Wright. The building is an example of his ecclesiastical work. His preference for tawney buff brickwork, red tile hip roofs, canted dormers, windows grouped beneath severe lancets and stylized sculptural details recalls similar designs by contemorary "expressionist" architects in Germany. The sculpture and decoration over the southwest portal (removed when the school became a Muslim school in 1981) was executed by Alfonso Iannelli (Park Ridge, IL.) A convent and school addition were made in the mid 50s. The campus buildings received Chicago Landmark status on July 27, 1983.
Once upon a time, Irving Park Road ended at the school before Lake Shore Drive ever existed - see photo.
Today the building is occupied by the Lycée Français de Chicago (a private, not-for-profit, coeducational day school serving 558 students from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade.)
