Sign text: The house was begun by Rev. Samuel Witherspoon Doak and occupied by the elder Samuel Doak until his death in 1829. It remained in the Doak family until Tusculum College acquired the property. Tusculumn College was founded in 1818; fifty years later Greeneville College, which was founded by the Rev. Hezekiah Balch in 1794, merged with Tusculum College.
